At the start of fall, East LA Cross Country head coach Milton Browne thought that sophomore Sakura Divecchio had a shot at making State this season. She showed her talents during last spring's SCC Track & Field Championships when she placed second in Women's 1500 meter, and had been running well enough this season to keep her in all-conference contention.

She made good on her coach's confidence yesterday: her 21:42.0 time at the South Coast Conference Women's Cross Country Championship race (Palos Verde Park 5K course) was good for ninth place and an All-SCC Second-Team nod. It was the first time in seven years a Huskies' runner made the All-SCC Team.

"She'll be at the SoCal Regionals next week in Bakersfield," says Coach Browne. "If she can finish in the top half, she'll qualify for the CCCAA Championships in Fresno on the 19th."

As to why Divecchio has continued to perform strongly, Coach Browne says it's her dedication plus her profile. "It's how hard she works, how disciplined she is," says Browne. "She puts the time into it. And it's paying off."
