Weekly Roundup: Both Men & Women's Basketball Go 3-0 This Week as Playoffs Draw Near

by Cerwin D Haynes

Both men and women's teams of East Los Angeles College basketball had a good week. They each went 3-0 as they look to strengthen their respective playoff resumes.

We take a quick review as they both set sights on the final week of the regular season next week.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

The Huskies began their week with a big non-conference matchup with #16 State-ranked Long Beach City College on a rare Monday game (it was a makeup game from last month's postponement due to the L.A. fires). The Pack trailed the Vikings all throughout the second half until the literal final minute, mounting a dramatic 76-73 come-from-behind victory that will go a long way towards their push for the 3C2A Playoffs. Freshman PG Moriah Mosley scored a season-high 29 points in the win.

Next, East LA made the short hop over to Whittier to take on Rio Hondo College. Not wanting to lose momentum from Monday's win, the Pack pounced all over the Roadrunners in the first half, leading 38-14 at the break and eventually earning a dominant 77-50 win. The Huskies got balanced scoring throughout the roster as five players scored in double digits: Mosley (11 points), PG Derricka Millinghaus (13 points while adding 14 rebounds), F Olivia Paramo (15 points with 11 rebounds), F/C Asiah Harris (14 points with four blocks) and G/F Sarah Ramos (10 points). ELAC also dominated the boards with a 69-44 advantage on the glass.

Back at the "E-rena", ELAC would take on Pasadena City College tonight in a Valentine's Day rematch. Love may have been the theme of the day (to wit: the Huskies debuted their pink jerseys for the occasion), but neither team showed any love towards the rims - both teams shot poorly from the field (32.4% for ELAC, 24.6% for PCC). In a scratch-and-claw game, East LA set themselves apart in the third quarter, outscoring the Lancers 21-11 to take a 44-26 lead into the final quarter. PCC would get no closer than 11 points during the fourth as the Huskies salted away a 55-39 win.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

Rapper Fat Joe once penned in his hit "Lean Back" that his team "didn't even have to play to win the championship". Well, there's no championships to be decided just yet, but the #8 State-ranked Huskies picked up a pair of victories on Monday and Wednesday without needing to take the court. As with the ladies, the men also had a makeup game Monday planned as Los Angeles Southwest College was set to come into Monterey Park. The Cougars were set to come in off a close win versus L.A. Harbor the Friday before, but it appears that win came at a cost: Southwest only had five players eligible for that game, which meant no bench to spell the starters. The result was them not having enough players to take on the Huskies, so they forfeited.

Skipping to Wednesday, Mosley's crew resumed conference play as they were to join the women in Whittier to also take on Rio Hondo. But the Roadrunners - yet another team extremely thin on roster size - also did not have enough players to compete. Thus, they forfeited (Rio has decided to forfeit their remaining games of the season as well) before anyone got to suit up.

The oddities of the week subsided as ELAC finally got to take the court again as they hosted against Pasadena City College tonight. The Lancers, fresh off a huge upset over #3 State-ranked Mt. SAC on Wednesday, looked to push their luck against the home Green (who wore pink tonight for Valentine's Day). PCC was feisty, but the Huskies offensive efficiency - shooting a scorching 70.6% from the field (36-51 FGs) - was more than enough to turn away Pasadena 90-77. Freshman big F Terrance Hampton had yet another double-double with 21 points (10-12 FGs) and 10 rebounds. Sophomore PG Donjae Lindsey poured in 25 points off the bench (11-13 FGs, 2-3 3FGs) as East LA continues to run their state-best win streak to 22-straight.

HUSKY BITS

  • Women's Basketball is currently ranked 20th in SoCal for RPI (strength of schedule), a metric that factors heavily into playoff considerations. With an anticipated 24-team playoff bracket in the South, the current outlook looks good for a playoff spot, particularly if they beat LATTC next Wednesday, February 19th. The win would secure no worse than second place in the SCC-North before their regular season finale at Mt. SAC the following Friday, February 21st.
  • PCC's upset of Mt. SAC this week did ELAC Men's Basketball a HUGE favor. With the Mounties now two games back of the Pack, all East LA has to do is beat LATTC next week to win the SCC-North Championship.
    • But wait, there's more! Should Coach Mosley's crew beat Mt. SAC up in Walnut next Friday - a significant task - they will have made the strongest case possible for overtaking the Mounties as SoCal's top team (ELAC also owns a victory over #5 Citrus College). A #1 seed in the SoCal playoff bracket is well in play for ELAC: the top four seeds get a first round bye and only need to win two home games to advance to the State Championships.

UP NEXT:

Sophomore Night will be next Wednesday, February 19 as the women (5pm) and men (7pm) host LA Trade Tech College.
