Huskies baseball defeats No. 7 Glendale 4-1
GLENDALE, CA — The East Los Angeles College baseball team defeated the No. 7-ranked team in SoCal, Glendale Community College, 4-1 today after losing to the Vaqueros 3-0 yesterday.
Glendale (10-4) began the season with six-consecutive wins that included two vs. ELAC South Coast Conference rivals, No. 14 Cerritos College (a 3-1 Glendale win) and a 14-4 win against Mt. San Antonio College.
The Huskies (4-7) got on the board first against Glendale. Freshman catcher Michael Luna (Arcadia High School) reached first on a fielder's choice. He advanced to second on a wild pitch.
Sophomore third baseman Shun Tsunoda (Hacienda Heights Wilson HS) singled (RBI) and ELAC led 1-0 in the top of the third inning.
In the top of the fourth, ELAC sophomore shortstop Steve Romo (El Dorado HS) smashed a two-RBI home run and ELAC increased its lead to 3-0.
In the sixth inning, freshman designated hitter Travis Mcfarland (Norco HS) singled as did Romo, who bunted and reached second on a Vaquero throwing error by third baseman Seiji Kusakariba.
ELAC freshman second baseman Zachary Rojo (Northview HS) flied out to centerfield. The RBI sacrifice fly scored Mcfarland, unearned.
Glendale responded in the bottom of the inning with freshman catcher Liam Shibata hitting a 2‑RBI double.
Other Huskies singles came from Romo, Kuna and freshman left fielder Kelvin Brito (Miami Beach HS).
ELAC freshman pitcher Alex Carrillo (West Covina HS) pitched five strong innings and held Glendale scoreless. Carrillo struck out seven Vaqueros swinging and two looking, for nine strikes.
ELAC freshman pitcher, Thomas Escobedo (Northview HS), pitched the ninth frame and earned the save. Sophomore pitcher Adam Cienfuegos (St Paul HS) was on the mound for two innings.
Glendale sent nine pitchers to the mound. Freshman right hand pitcher Cole Currie (0-1), who pitched the first three innings with three strikeouts, recorded the loss.
In the shutout loss to Glendale yesterday, ELAC was outhit 5-4. Two of ELAC's three errors led to the Vaqueros scoring two unearned runs in the bottom of the third inning. Glendale Liam Shibata homered in the ninth.
The Husky hits were singles from Tsunoda, Mcfarland, Rojo and freshman catcher Ismael Martinez (Ramona HS).
In its quest to win its second SCC title in three years, ELAC begins South Coast Conference play with a three-game series against No. 9 El Camino College (9-4). Home games in the series are Tuesday, March 8 at 6 p.m. and Saturday, March 12 at 1 p.m.
