ELAC baseball wins series vs. Mt. SAC 2-1

WALNUT, CA — The East Los Angeles College baseball team won a three-game series against Mt. San Antonio College and as a result moved up to fourth place in the South Coast Conference.

The Huskies are 13-17 overall and 8-7 in the SCC. Long Beach City College (19-11, 11-4) won a 10-9, 10-inning home game vs. Cerritos College (19-11, 11-4) today. Both teams moved into a second place tie. El Camino College (22-8, 12-3) moved into first place with 10-3 win at LA Harbor College (11-19, 7-8).

Mt. SAC defeated ELAC 5-2 today. The Huskies won 3-1 at ELAC on Thursday and recorded a 4-1 win on Tuesday behind the solid pitching of sophomore Julian Vizcarra (El Rancho HS) who pitched eight innings with four strikes.

Mt. SAC opened the scoring in the third inning. Mountie freshman second baseman Reily Carroll (Lancaster HS) singled to left center followed with a triple to right center by freshman first baseman Nicholas Muratalla (San Dimas HS). Mt. SAC led 1-0.

ELAC scored three runs in the third inning. ELAC freshman catcher Ismael Martinez (Ramona HS) reached first on an error by Mt. SAC freshman third baseman Matthew Majher (Corona HS). ELAC freshman centerfielder Anthony Bocanegra (Burroughs HS) doubled to right center and Martinez scored unearned.

Later in the inning, sophomore right fielder Mel Robles (St. John Bosco HS) singled to center field (two RBIs) and ELAC led 3-1. The Huskies added a run in the top of the ninth. First baseman Larson Anzaldo (St. Paul HS) singled to left field; sophomore shortstop Shun Tsunoda (HH Wilson HS) doubled to right center (RBI) and Anzaldo scored.

In the Huskies 3-1 win at ELAC, Mt. SAC outslugged ELAC 12-8. The Mounties scored a run in the top of the third from three-consecutive singles. ELAC freshman pitcher Alberto Lopez (Southeast HS) replaced sophomore George Alamillo (LA Marshall HS) on the mound and followed with two outs to get out of the inning down 1-0.

In the bottom of the sixth, a pitch hit ELAC freshman designated hitter Anthony Mayorga (Chatsworth HS) followed with a pitch hitting Anzaldo. Robles then doubled (two RBIs) and ELAC led 2-1.

Mt. SAC followed with two hits in the seventh. Lopez followed with two outs. ELAC sophomore shortstop Seve Romo (El Dorado HS) hit a home run in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Lopez retired the side in the ninth, with the first two outs strikes, and the Huskies won two-straight against Mt. SAC.

Mt. SAC avoided a sweep in the series finale today with the three-run win. The Mounties scored a run in the first inning then added two runs in the third and led 3-0.

The Huskies rallied in the seventh. Anzaldo walked. Robles reached on a fielder's choice and Martinez singled to left field. Freshman first baseman Travis McFarland (Norco HS) singled to left field and ELAC was on the board. Mt. SAC led 3-2.

Mt. SAC had a pitching change and Mountie sophomore pitcher Nathaniel Alam (Placentia HS) followed with two strikes to end the ELAC threat.

Mt. SAC scored two runs in the eighth and Alam retired the side in the ninth with the final two outs strikes.

The Huskies play a three-game South Coast Conference series against El-Camino-Compton Center with games at Compton Tuesday April 19 and Saturday April 23.

ELAC’s only home game of the three-game series is Thursday, April 21 at 6 p.m.
