ELAC baseball takes fourth place
MONTEREY PARK, CA — Down 9-8 after 7½ innings, East Los Angeles College baseball team rallied for an 11-9 win against Pasadena City in its last game of the season and placed fourth in the final South Conference standings.
With the win, the Huskies won their South Coast Conference three-game series against the Lancers. ELAC won 6-0 at home on Tuesday, lost at Pasadena 5-4 in 11 innings on Thursday and won by two runs today.
The Huskies won all its series in the month of April, against Long Beach City College, Mt. San Antonio College, El Camino-Compton Center and Pasadena.
ELAC finished 9-4 in the SCC during the month of April and ended the season 17-19 overall and 12-9 in the SCC, a game out of third place
Long Beach (24-12, 16-5) won the SCC title, Cerritos College (23-13, 15-6) took second place and El Camino College (24-12, 13-8) finished in third. Mt. SAC took fifth and finished three games behind the Huskies.
According to the CCCAA, freshman Anthony Bocanegra (Burroughs HS) and sophomore Larson Anzaldo (St. Paul HS) led the Huskies on offensive and defensive play.
Bocanegra hit a .393 batting average this season, best in the SCC and 17th best in the state. He had 44 hits and 11 RBIs. Anzaldo had a .997 fielding percentage and 297 pullouts, third best in the SCC and 22nd best in the state.
ELAC sophomore pitcher Seve Romo (El Dorado HS) had an ERA of 1.58, eighth best in the state, threw 65 strikeouts in the 68.1 innings he pitched.
Sophomore pitcher Julian Vizcarra (El Rancho HS) had a 1.62 ERA, 10th best in the state and finished 6-1 overall. Freshman pitcher Alberto Lopez (Southeast HS) ended the season with a 1.69 ERA, 11th-best in the state.
In the game today, Pasadena scored three runs in the top of the eighth from four hits and turned an 8-6 deficit into a 9-8 lead. After one out in the bottom of the inning, Bocanegra bunted safe and reached second on a Pasadena City throwing error.
Freshman left fielder Kelvin Brito (Miami, Miami Beach HS) walked. After a failed pickoff attempt, Bocanegra stole third. Brito stole second. Romo singled to left center scoring two runs and the Huskies led 10-9 amidst the home crowd noise.
Freshman third baseman Anthony Mayorga (Chatsworth HS) walked. Romo advanced to third on a passed ball. Freshman first baseman Travis Mcfarland (Norco HS) flied out (RBI sacrifice fly) to right field and ELAC led 11-9.
Sophomore pitcher George Alamillo (L.A. Marshall HS) closed out his ELAC career retiring the side, including one strike, after he yielded a single. Alamillo was the winning pitcher and threw three strikes in only 1.2 innings on the mound.
The Huskies had 17 hits, three each from Romo (three RBIs), Brito who slammed a triple (two RBIs) and freshman catcher Ismael Martinez (Ramona HS) with three singles and one RBI. Mayorga singled and doubled, Bocanegra and Mcfarland each singled twice with two RBIs.
Two Huskies singled – freshman second baseman Cesar Torres (Downey HS) with one RBI and sophomore right fielder Mel Robles (St. John Bosco HS).
In the 6-0 Huskies win, winning pitcher Vizcarra pitched all nine innings and threw three strikes. The Huskies powered 16 hits led by Mayorga and Brito with three each. Robles homered in the second inning.
Three Huskies singled twice, Carrillo, Romo and sophomore second baseman Shun Tsunoda (HH Wilson HS). Martinez and freshman right fielder Nathan Luna (JW North HS) each singled.
In the 5-4 loss to the Lancers, ELAC fell behind 3-1, rallied in the top of the eighth with three runs scored to take a 4-3, but lost in extra innings. The Huskies muscled 11 hits. Bocanegra singled three times, Robles and Mcfarland each singled twice, Romo and Brito each doubled and Martinez and Mayorga each singled.
Sophomores who ended their Huskies baseball careers included George Alamillo (L.A. Marshall HS), Jose Amezquita (Alhambra HS), Anzaldo, Robles, Romo, Johnny Salgado (Whittier HS), Tsunoda, Ryan Viramontes (West Covina HS) and Vizcarra.
