Husky baseball is 2-0 after 15-4 win

SAN JACINTO, CA — The East Los Angeles College baseball team won its second consecutive game, a 15-4, 13-hit victory at Mt. San Jacinto College.

Yesterday, the Huskies’ first hit was a home run from freshman first baseman Oscar Osorio (Charter Oak High School).

Today’s first hit was from sophomore center fielder Morgan Lomax (Gardena Serra HS) who doubled down the left line. His first-at-bat double began a three-run first inning for ELAC.

Lomax then stole third base. He has four on the season, second most in the state.

Osorio walked, then freshman third baseman Matthew Sosa (Whittier HS) singled to right field (RBI) and the Huskies led 1-0. A walk from Mt. San Jacinto pitcher Kaycee Garcia to ELAC freshman designated hitter Thomas Acuña (Pomona HS) loaded the bases.

After the first out, a pitch by Garcia hit freshman right fielder Elias Maldonado (Northview HS) for an RBI and ELAC led 2-0. Freshman pitcher Julian Zermeno (Alhambra HS) flied out to center field (RBI) and ELAC had a 3-0 lead.

Mt. San Jacinto scored a run in the bottom of the first and ELAC added a run in the top of the second from an Acuña single to left field (RBI).

The Huskies added three runs, two unearned in the top of the third inning from an RBI single by Sosa and a walk each to two freshmen, first baseman Joaquin Castillo (Warren HS) and shortstop Gabriel Figueroa (Alhambra HS).

ELAC added a run in the top of the fourth that included a single by Figueroa and a walk each to Zermeno, sophomore left fielder Nathan Luna (JW North HS) and Lomax (RBI). ELAC led 8-1.

Mt. San Jacinto responded in the bottom of the inning with a three-run burst from four singles. The Huskies led 8-4.

While Mt. San Jacinto scattered four of its 10 hits during the remainder of the ballgame, ELAC belted eight more hits that resulted in seven added runs.

Freshman Adrian Cardenas (Sierra Vista HS) got the win for ELAC. He pitched four innings and recorded three strikes.

Sophomore pitcher Matthew Cortez (Cantwell Sacred-Heart HS) had three strikes in two innings while freshman pitcher Ryan Orozco (Montebello HS) got the save and had two strikes in three innings Sosa produced a game-high three hits and three RBIs. In just two games, Sosa has the 12th most RBIs in the state.

Four Huskies had two hits, Acuña (2 RBIs), Lomax (RBI), Figueroa (RBI) and sophomore second baseman Benjamin Arce (Santa Monica HS) who had an RBI. Maldonado (RBI) and Castillo (RBI) each singled.

The Huskies (2-0) host their first home game of the season against Victor Valley College on Tuesday, Jan. 31 at 2 p.m.
