ELAC baseball wins third straight ballgame

MONTEREY PARK, CA — The East Los Angeles College baseball team won its third straight non-conference game with a 6-2, 10-hit, error-free victory against Victor Valley College.

Freshman pitcher Tyler Oblea (Cathedral High School) got the win. Oblea pitched six innings and had four strikes including the first two batters he faced. He pitched two three-and-out innings.

ELAC struck first with a run in the bottom of the opening inning. Freshman third baseman Matthew Sosa (Whittier HS) singled then stole second based. Freshman designated hitter Thomas Acuña (Pomona HS) singled (RBI) and ELAC led 1-0.

The Huskies scored two runs each, in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings.

In the fourth, two sophomores singled for ELAC, catcher Ismael Martinez (Riverside Ramona HS) and center fielder Morgan Lomax (Gardena Serra HS) who had an RBI.

Husky freshman first baseman Oscar Osorio (Charter Oak HS) singled in the fifth. A walk and two outs followed, sandwiched with Osorio stealing second. Martinez reached base on a fielder’s choice (RBI). Sosa stole home then Martinez was picked off at first. ELAC led 5-0 after five.

ELAC added a run in the eighth frame. Freshman shortstop Gabriel Figueroa (Alhambra HS) singled (RBI) after a walk and balk to sophomore infielder Kyle Francis (WA / Redmond HS).

Victor Valley averted a shutout with two runs, one unearned, in the top of the ninth.

Figueroa, Osorio and Martinez had two hits each for ELAC. Huskies that had one single each included Lomax (RBI), Sosa, Acuña (RBI) and freshman right fielder Elias Maldonado (Northview HS).

The Huskies (3-0) play at Citrus College (0-1-1) on Thursday and host Glendale Community College (2-0-1) this Saturday, Feb. 4 at 1 p.m.
