Huskies break records in 71-13 win
LOS ANGELES, CA — The East Los Angeles College football team defeated Los Angeles Southwest College 71-13 in an American Division Metro League contest at Cougars Stadium topping two school records.
The Huskies broke the school record for most points scored in a game for the second time during the ELAC Head Coach Bobby Godinez era.
Last season, ELAC won 70-26 at West Los Angeles College posting the most points ever in a Husky football game during a span of 70 years.
“It was great to get a win and to be able to play everybody again,” said Godinez. “It’s going to be a good finish for us.”
With the addition of the 71 points scored tonight, the Huskies have totaled 259 in seven games, sixth most in the state.
The Huskies held Southwest to minus 14 yards rushing besting their previous record -- of least rushing yards allowed in a game -- which was previously 38 versus Glendale Community College in 2014.
Godinez played the entire team to keep the score down, but the Huskies rushed for a season-high 281 yards on the ground.
“After we scored a lot of points we went to the ground game and we all got some time in,” said sophomore wide receiver Garrison Harris (GA / Elbert County High School). “Our ground game clicked and we scored more touchdowns. I think there should be a mercy rule in football.”
The Huskies scored four touchdowns on the ground, a season-high, which included two from sophomore running back Nicholas Hutson (Paramount HS) and one from sophomore running back Lavell Thompson (South Gate HS), which was a 43-yard touchdown run.
The Huskies opened the scoring with three first quarter touchdowns, the latter a 21-yard pass from ELAC freshman quarterback Phillip Tran (San Jose / Archbishop Mitty HS) to sophomore wide receiver Kenny Allen (Fairfax HS), culminating a 3-play 45-yard drive.
Southwest scored a minute and 13 seconds into the second quarter from a freshman quarterback Rodney Evans 1-yard touchdown pass to sophomore wide receiver Kaelin Humphrey and ELAC led 19-7.
After ELAC scored and led 26-7, the Huskies were closing in on the red zone when Southwest sophomore defensive back Jeff Hector got a fumble recovery, spun around, and raced 69-yards for a touchdown with 6:51 left in the half.
With a minute left in the half, sophomore defensive lineman Tysean Brown (Monrovia HS) blocked a Southwest punt and freshman defensive back Kevin Trejo (Eagle Rock HS) picked it up off the bounce and scored a 5-yard touchdown run, his first in college.
The Huskies led 47-13 at the half.

Tran went 16-of-23 for 191 yards with three aerial touchdowns and one from a 1-yard touchdown run, all in the first half. Tran has passed for 12 touchdowns this season, 12th most in the state.
ELAC freshman quarterback Paul Herrera (Aspire Pacific Academy), who led the helm in the second half was 10-of-18 passing for 86 yards and two touchdowns.
Two ELAC sophomore wide receivers had 51 yards each in reception yardage, Deontavius Hall (Alabama / Central HS) and Isiah Araujo (El Rancho HS).
Hall hauled in two passes, both for touchdowns including a 46-yarder while Araujo had four receptions.
Sophomore defensive back Toure Wallace (Chicago Vocational HS) had three receptions for 47 yards with one for a touchdown.
Freshman wide receiver Ravon Bass (NC / Northern Durham HS) scored a touchdown from a Herrera 2-yard pass with 10:02 left in the game.
Freshman kicker Hector Gomez (Roosevelt HS) split the uprights for the PAT, which sailed into the record book. Gomez has 29 PATs, ninth most in the state.
ELAC received 120 yards in penalties tonight and are the most penalized team in the state with a total of 999 yards.
On the ground, Thompson led ELAC with 136 yards rushing in nine carries, Hutson carried the ball eight times for 59 yards and scored two touchdowns.
On defense, the Huskies had five quarterback sacks to up their season total to 23, sixth best in the state. Sophomore defensive lineman Sione Vea (Honolulu, HI / Kalani HS) recorded two of the sacks and leads the Huskies with five sacks this season.
Sophomore linebacker Brentton Hill (Tracy HS) and Brown each recorded a sack.
Freshman defensive back Delon Collins (La Mirada Adult School) led the Huskies in tackles with six.
Two defensive backs each had five tackles for ELAC, freshman Chad Earle (SC / Seneca HS), all unassisted, and sophomore Aubrey Mosley-Laughlin (Monrovia HS). Two Huskies each had one sack, Brown and sophomore linebacker Brentton Hill (Tracy HS).
Four defensive backs each pulled in one interception for ELAC, Earle who returned his for 25 yards, Trejo, freshman DeAndre Watson (Millikan HS) and freshman Ahmir Davis (Muir HS).
Other Metro League results from tonight included Santa Ana College (4-3, 3-0) taking a 45-16 win from Glendale Community College (0-6, 0-2) and West LA College (2-5, 2-1) winning 24-7 versus ECC Compton (0-7, 0-4). Pasadena City College (3-3, 2-0) had a bye.
ELAC has a bye next Saturday, Oct. 21.
“This is more of a get better week than a bye week,” said defensive back Robert Miller (Paramount HS). “We’re locking it down.”
“We executed tonight, did our assignments and we’re at the right places at the right time,” said Miller. “We will take this week to learn more and stay focused because we take every game serious.”
