East L.A. College Breaks Two Records in 55-0 Mercy Rule win
COMPTON, Calif. — The East Los Angeles College football team playing most of its players, won 55-0 against Compton College in a shortened game. The final two quarters were eight minutes apiece.
The No. 14-ranked Huskies (SCFA National Division Poll) added two football records in their second shutout win in four games. ELAC held Compton to minus 45 yards rushing breaking the previous record of limiting Santa Monica College to minus 25 yards in 2010. The Huskies tied the record for most sacks in a game 11, which they did vs. Compton en route to a 48-7-win Nov. 9, 2013.
One of the buses broke down on the way to the game and delayed half of the team’s arrival until an hour before the start of the game. This didn’t deter the Huskies building a 31-0 first quarter lead.
ELAC begin its scoring with a 38-yard field goal from freshman kicker Juan Rangel (Mendez HS) at the 8:51 mark. Four touchdowns ensued, a 16-yard pass from freshman quarterback Miguel Aguero (Schurr HS) to sophomore wide receiver Terrell Robinson (Hawkins HS), a 31-yard interception return from sophomore defensive back Sam Brown (GA / Archer HS), a 1-yard run by sophomore running back Tony Toledo (Burbank HS) and a sophomore QB Paul Herrera 10-yard toss to freshman WR Robert Cottrell (Lynwood HS). Herrera closed out the first half scoring with a 12-yard pass to freshman WR Daniel Munguia (Don Lugo HS).
In the third quarter, freshman kicker Ricky Quintero (Cathedral HS) connected on a 48-yard field goal — the longest Husky 3-pointer since 1975 when sophomore Efrain Velasco (L.A. Wilson HS), a 1973 All-City Player, split a 54-yarder through the uprights for ELAC. Quintero averaged 47.0 yards per punt with a long of 54 yards.
ELAC followed with a touchdown from a 5-play, 40-yard drive on a 2-yard run from Armando Velasquez, who accounted for 30 yards with 10 yards coming from Compton penalties. ELAC capped its scoring from Toledo’s 20-yard touchdown run with 33 seconds left in the quarter.
In the fourth, with 2:45 remaining in the game, the Huskies sacked Compton QB Mustafa Muhammad for a 10-yard loss who fumbled at the ELAC 22-yard line recovered by Huskies freshman Frank Mota (Mendez HS). “I just did my job, what I’m coached to do,” said Mota. “I saw the fumble and took advantage of the opportunity.” Prior to that, sophomore freshman DB Antoinette “Toni” Harris” (MI / Redford Union HS) intercepted a pass by Muhammad which was nullified by an ELAC roughing the passer penalty. The Huskies quickly marched to the Compton 11-yard line with 30 seconds remaining and ran the clock out in a good sportsmanship move.

The Huskies are on the road again playing Mt. San Antonio College Sept. 22 at 6 p.m. at the Covina District Field located at 200 W Puente St, Covina, CA 91723. Mt. SAC, the No. 4-ranked team in the nation (JC Gridiron Rankings), was shocked 13-0 by Chaffey College tonight.
“We prepare for every game regardless of who we meet and have a week to get ready for Mt. SAC,” said sophomore RB Andrew Arguelles (Charter Oak HS). “We will step up to this big challenge.”
