ELAC men's basketball streak reaches 10

PASADENA, CA — The East Los Angeles College men’s basketball team survived a scare and a bug and defeated Pasadena City College 70-51 in South Coast Conference North Division play.

 Several Huskies and coaches worked with the flu and got through the first half and Pasadena’s vocal crowd with a 26-22 lead.

In the second half, the Huskies outran the Lancers and connected on 20-of-33 field goals (60.6 percent) with 13 assists.

The state’s No. 4-ranked Huskies improved to 19-2 overall and 2-0 in the SCC North, while Pasadena (4-17, 0-3) remained in last place. ELAC’s win-streak reached 10.

ELAC sophomore guard Iziahiah Sweeny scored a team-high 16 points. For the third time in four games, sophomore guard Jarrell Tate (Birmingham, Alabama Wenonah HS) came off the bench and scored in double figures, 14 tonight.

Pasadena freshman guard Jamon Moore scored a game-high 18 points for the Lancers. Lancer sophomore forward Darrell Childs had the games only double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds.

ELAC sophomore forward Richard Bivens (Bakersfield Ridgeview HS) and freshman forward Arinze Anakwenze (John Muir HS) each had nine rebounds.

ELAC had 17 assists to Pasadena’s eight. Husky freshman guard had a team-high five assists. The Huskies had seven blocked shots, which induced oohs and aahs.

In other action of SCC North teams, Mt. San Antonio College won an 86-71 non-conference game at L.A. Southwest College (0-16) and El Camino-Compton Center defeated L.A. Trade Tech, 87-76.

ELAC faces a big test at Compton (12-9, 2-1) on Friday at 7 p.m. preceded by the women’s game at 5 p.m. A large crowd is expected.
