Showdown set after come from behind win

MONTEREY PARK, CA — Down 62-51 with 9:39 remaining against L.A. Trade Tech, the Huskies ran off a 30-11 rally for a huge 81-73 win to set up a South Coast Conference showdown.

Because of East Los Angeles College’s 81-73 win against crosstown city rival Trade Tech, the Huskies meet Mt. San Antonio College in a contest that will probably determine the SCC title. 

The state’s No. 4-ranked East Los Angeles College men’s basketball team, 21-2 overall and 4-0 in the SCC, will play at Mt. SAC (13-10, 4-1) on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

ELAC stopped Mt. SAC’s 9-game conference win streak on Jan. 22 with an 82-62 victory.

An ELAC repeat win, gives the Huskies the inside track to win their second SCC title in three years. A Husky loss could result in a tie for the SCC crown if both teams win out. ELAC has three SCC games remaining after the showdown while Mt. SAC has two.

Trade Tech was 2-18 overall and 1-3 in the SCC entering the game at ELAC, but recent history dictates that records do not matter when these two rivals meet.

In addition, the Beavers had three close losses this season to ranked teams, including a 62-57 setback to No. 1 Saddleback College.

The rivalry game began with four lead changes and two ties and ELAC held a brief lead until a three-point play gave Trade Tech a 12-11 lead with 11:38 remaining in the first half.

The Beavers built their largest lead, 57-44, with 12:32 left in the game.

Trade Tech played around with double-digit leads until ELAC freshman guard Sequan Walker hit a three-point shot with 9:19 left in the game for a 62-54 Beaver lead, which was the beginning of a Husky rally.

ELAC sophomore guard Iziahiah Sweeny (Compton HS) capped off the rally with a layup from an assist by sophomore guard Jarrell Tate (Birmingham, Alabama Wenonah HS) to give the Huskies a 67-66 lead with 4:55 left.

Trade Tech forward Justin Clark answered with two free throws, eight seconds later.

Husky sophomore forward Richard Bivens (Bakersfield Ridgeview HS) connected on a layup from an assist by ELAC freshman guard Chandler Redix (Cathedral HS) and ELAC led 69-68 with 4:18 left.
