ELAC men’s basketball opens on the road

NORWALK, CA — The California Community College Athletic Association Southern California Regional playoff brackets and seeding’s were announced today from Cerritos College.

The last time East Los Angeles College men’s basketball team received a difficult playoff seeding, the Huskies advanced to the state finals.

The SoCal 10th-seed Huskies (21-6) play on the road at 7th-seed Mt. San Jacinto College (22-10), on Friday Feb. 24 at 7 p.m. in a Round 2 playoff game.

The winner advances to the Sweet 16 to face the winner of No. 2-seed ECC Compton Center vs. the wild card winner of a Round 1 matchup, between No. 15-seed Irvine Valley (14-13) and No. 18-seed Ventura College (17-12), champions of the Western State North.

ELAC, co-champions of the South Coast Conference North Division, and Mt. San Jacinto, co-champs of the Pacific North, have played twice this season.

ELAC defeated the Eagles 87-85 on Jan. 7 in the robin-round Cuesta Tournament, which was ELAC Head Coach John Mosley’s 100th win in five years at ELAC.

Mt. San Jacinto took the first meeting, 90-83, in the third round of the Riverside Holiday Tournament on Dec. 7.

“Our season starts over; it’s 0-0,” said Mosley. “It takes five to win a state championship and two wins to advance to the Elite 8 (the state finals) but we play one game at a time.”

The state championships return to the Elite 8 format and will be at Las Positas College on March 9-12 in Livermore.
