ELAC Men’s Basketball Wins 100-74 Over Santa Monica College

MONTEREY PARK, CA — The Huskies men’s basketball scored 100 points for the third time in their last seven games with a 100-74 win over Santa Monica College in the 2018 Reggie Morris Classic.

East Los Angeles College (14-4) played the second of five games at the Los Angeles Southwest College Showcase, which featured four ranked teams including the No. 6 state-ranked Huskies.

The Huskies bounced back from their loss last weekend to No. 4 San Bernardino Valley College with a 49-33 halftime lead over Santa Monica. ELAC outscored the Corsairs 51-41 in the second half enroute to the 26-point win.

ELAC’s defensive play was key in the win. The Huskies out-rebounded Santa Monica 47-35, had more assists (23-17) and almost doubled the number of steals, 23-12.

Four men from each team scored in double figures. Two Huskies had double doubles. Freshman forward Jacob Tryon (Great Oak High School) scored 19 points and finished with 10 rebounds. He had two blocked shots for the second straight game. Freshman center Solomon Hunt (Upland HS) scored 17 points and pulled down 10 rebounds.

ELAC sophomore guard Frank Bertz (Sultana HS) scored a game-high 22 points. Bertz had five assists and four steals. Sophomore forward Roderick Williams (Price HS) scored 16 points. Freshman guard Nick Hart (West Covina HS) had a game-high six steals and a game-high six assists.

Sophomore forward Michael Fry (Palisades HS) led Santa Monica with a double double. He scored 19 points and had 12 rebounds. Sophomore guard Joe Robinson (Palisades HS) and freshman guard Justin Coats (Gardena HS) scored 17 and 14 points, respectively for the Corsairs and each finished with a team-high five assists. Freshman guard Ernie Valadez (Southeast HS) rounded out the double-digit scoring for Santa Monica.

The Huskies begin South Coast Conference North Division play next Wednesday at home against Pasadena City College (8-9).
