ELAC Men’s Basketball Team Defeats Mt. San Jacinto 79-61

RIVERSIDE, CA —  No. 9 statewide-ranked East Los Angeles College won 79-61 against one of the hottest teams in the state, Mt. San Jacinto College, in the opening round of the Riverside Holiday Classic at Wheelock Gymnasium today.

Mt. San Jacinto has played six Top-10 teams to date and defeated two of them in the last week, 75-74 against No. 7 Copper Mountain College and 89-86 against then No. 4-ranked Santiago Canyon College.

ELAC sophomore forward Roderick Williams (Price High School) returned to the lineup at full strength coming off an injury and scored a game-high 24 points for the Huskies.

After three lead changes and two ties, ELAC went on a run and led 24-15 off of two free throws from sophomore guard Robert Fuller (St. Bernard HS) with 6:17 left in the half. Mt. San Jacinto followed with an 8-0 run that included two 3-points shots from freshman guard C.J. Hyder      (Cajon HS).

The Eagles caught the Huskies at 26-26 with 3:01 remaining in the half. ELAC followed with a 9-0 run and led 35-26 at the break with a lead they did not relinquish.

Two other Huskies scored in double digits, freshman center Solomon Hunt (Upland HS) scored 19 points and freshman forward Jacob Tryon (Great Oak HS) scored 13. Tryon had a game-high three blocked shots. He has 20 blocked shots this season, ninth most in the state.

The Huskies had 16 assists with eight of them from freshman guard Nick Hart (West Covina HS). Tryon and Hunt led the Huskies in rebounds with seven apiece. Hart and freshman guard Darius Henderson (Taft HS) each had six rebounds.

Mt. San Jacinto was led by two Eagles, Hyder and sophomore forward Jeremy Bonifacio, who each scored 12 points,

The Huskies, 8-2 overall, face No. 1 San Bernardino Valley College (11-0) in the semifinal round tomorrow at 5 p.m. San Bernardino edged No. 17 Fullerton College (7-4) 76-71 today.
