Men's soccer loses first SCC game
NORWALK, CA — In a battle of unbeaten South Coast Conference soccer teams, East Los Angeles College lost, 5-1, earlier today to Cerritos College.
ELAC, 5-2-5 overall, 2-1-2 in the SCC, drops to third place while Cerritos took over sole possession of first place.
ELAC scored its goal in the 39th minute, a freshman forward Carlos Salinas (Montebello High School) strike on the Cerritos goalkeeper Jaime Sanchez. Salinas worked past the Falcon defense and scored from an assist by freshman midfielder Jorge Chavez (Cathedral).
Cerritos freshman midfielder Juan Orozco opened the game scoring with two goals, four minutes into the game and in the 24th minute, the latter a 35-yard strike.
ELAC had an opportunity to score twice in the 18th minute. Freshman midfielder Javier Gutierrez (Montebello) shot a strike that rebounded off the cross bar to a quick reacting sophomore Albert Chamagua (Glendale) who shot the rebound wide hitting the goal post.
The Huskies outshot Cerritos 18-13. Freshman midfielder Jorge Chavez (Cathedral) had five shots. Salinas and Chamagua each had three shots as did freshman forward Valentin Mercado (Animo Ralph Bunche Charter).
ELAC’s goalie in the second half, freshman Alexis Castellanos (Bell Gardens), had two saves.
In other SCC action today, Pasadena City College (1-9-2, 1-3-1) stunned El Camino College Compton Center (4-6-2, 3-1-1), 2-1, with a 15-yard goal in the 90th minute. Compton dropped out of a first place tie in the SCC to second place.
El Camino College (1-6-5, 0-1-4) and Los Angeles Harbor College (2-8-2, 0-4-1) played to a 1-1 draw. Mt. San Antonio College (7-3-2, 2-1-2) won 2-0 against Long Beach City College (6-4-1, 2-2).
ELAC had a disappointing 1-1 draw at El Camino on Oct. 9. Jordan Elias scored his first goal of the season off a deflection in the 35th minute, assisted by freshman forward Raul Zamorano (Huntington Park).
El Camino earned the tie with a goal in minute 83. ELAC outshot El Camino 17-8.
In other SCC play, The Huskies defeated Pasadena 1-0 on Oct. 6 and avoided a loss to Mt. SAC with a scoreless draw on Oct. 2.
