ELAC men’s T&F get top-10 time
SAN DIEGO, CA — The men’s track and field team competed against mostly four-year university competition in a meet at Point Loma Nazarene University with results that included a CCCAA men’s statewide top-10 result.
East Los Angeles College sophomore Cristian Flores (Bell Gardens High School) placed third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase run and defeated all community college competition. Flores ran a personal record in the event and recorded the sixth-fastest time in the state.
He defeated West Los Angeles College sophomore Cesar Marquez, who took fourth place, 9:46.01 minutes to 9:48.01. Marquez beat Flores last week, 9:51.16 to 9:53.0, in another meet of mostly four-year university athletes, the Occidental College Carnival Classic.
Flores missed February’s meets due to an injury and returned to the ELAC T&F team last week after a two-year layoff. “He will continue to improve as the season progresses,” said ELAC Head Coach Louis Ramirez.
Flores also beat all community college competition in the 800-meter run except for West LA sophomore Roque Pennell. Pennell edged Flores by the closest of margins, 2/100’s of a second.
Flores clocked in at 2:02.40.
ELAC sophomore Justin Torres (Alhambra HS) took seventh in his 800-run heat in 2:06.47, followed by sophomores Fernando Jauregui (Hollywood HS) in 2:17.72 and Augustin Arias (Montebello HS) in 2:20.25. Jauregui ran a personal record in the event.
In the 1,500-meter run, Torres beat all community college competitors and finished in 4:18.63, a personal record. He was followed by Jauregui (4:37.23) and Arias who finished with a lifetime best result (4:44.03).
In the shot put, ELAC freshman Kyle Hua took third place in the second flight with a toss of 35.38 feet. He edged fourth place winner freshman Alex Alvarez of Vanguard University who threw 34.15 feet.
Huskies freshman Arturo Martinez competed in his first collegiate shot put event and placed 12th in the second flight with a throw of 23.66 feet, edging 13th place winner freshman Omar Lazo of West LA who threw 20.83 feet.
The Huskies compete in the Santa Barbara City College Easter Relays on Friday, March 25. The hammer and javelin throws begin at 9 a.m. at nearby Westmont College. All other events are at SBCC’s La Playa Stadium with a start time of 11 a.m.
