ELAC men's T&F undefeated in shot put

SAN DIEGO, CA — The East Los Angeles College Huskies men’s track and field team brought home another win in the shot put, this week at the Fourth Annual Arnie Robinson Invite.

Sophomore Cesar Santiesteban (Cathedral High School) won the shot put event against CCCAA men. He is undefeated in the event among community college competition and has the sixth-best throw in Southern California.

Freshman Kyle Hua threw a personal record in the shot put and placed sixth in the second flight.

Freshman Joshua Palmer (Baltimore, Randallstown HS) ran a lifetime-best in the 100-meter dash in 11.79 seconds to take fifth in the fourth heat of the event.

Sophomore Cristian Flores (Bell Gardens HS), who has the eighth-fastest steeplechase time in Southern California, placed third out of about 40 men in the 1,500-meter run.

Flores ran a personal-best time in the event, in his first 1,500 run in two years and is on the cusp of a SoCal qualifying time. Freshman Antonio Chamu (Los Angeles River School) placed seventh in the third heat of the 1,500 run.

In the 5,000-meter run, Flores ran a personal record of 16:07.53 and placed sixth in the event. It was his first race in the event after a two-year layoff. Sophomore Fernando Jauregui (Hollywood HS) knocked a minute from his previous best time in the event and placed 17th.

Sophomore Augustin Arias ran his first-ever 5,000 run as a Husky and defeated teammate Chamu, who also ran his first-ever 5,000 run, 18:17.12 to 18:46.9.

Freshman Anthony Jovel (Bell Gardens HS) placed third in heat three of the 800-meter run to round out the distance events.

In the sprints, freshman Shiloh Jordan is building speed at the right time, nearing the postseason, with a personal record and a fourth place finish in heat five of the 100-meter dash.

Jordan placed first in his first collegiate 200-meter dash event in the 11th heat in 24.59 seconds. Freshman Joshua Palmer placed third in the event’s 10th heat with a time of 24.53.

Palmer added the 400-meter dash to his repertoire and placed fifth in the event’s fourth heat in under a minute in 56.85. He outsprinted Fullerton freshman Zackary Martinson in the final 200 meters and crossed the finish line four seconds faster.

The Huskies 4 x 100 relay placed fourth with a personal record. The Husky team included Jordan, freshman Arturo Martinez (Jefferson HS), Santiesteban and Palmer.

ELAC will compete in the Cerritos College Invitational, April 8-9. Preliminaries will be on Friday, April 8 with the top-nine in each event moving on to the Invitational Finals on Saturday, April 9. Events for ELAC begin at noon both days.
