Huskies softball stuns Santa Ana 10-9

SANTA ANA, CA — The East Los Angeles College softball team scored a 6-run second inning and held off a Santa Ana rally for a 10-9 upset win against the powerhouse Dons.

Santa Ana scored first in the opening inning, and took a 1-0 lead off two double hits from sophomores, first baseman Hattie Marshall and catcher Madison Graham.

The Huskies scored six runs in the top of the second inning to take a 6-1 lead from one RBI double and 4 RBI single hits.

Designated player and freshman Julie Munoz (Warren High School) hit a two-RBI single in the inning.

ELAC’s one-RBI singles in the sixth were from sophomores, first baseman Ashley Day (Alhambra High School), right fielder Alexis Moreno (Whittier HS), shortstop Alizah Mayagoitia (Ramona Convent Secondary School) and second baseman Breanna Takenaka (Los Altos HS).

ELAC built a 10-3 lead in the top of the fifth inning. The Huskies had three unearned runs from two hits, a Santa Ana error and wild pitch.

With a 7-3 lead, ELAC sophomore left fielder Sujey Zamudio (Bell HS) opened the inning with a single. With two outs, Mayagoitia reached first base after a Santa Ana fielding error, which gave her another RBI and an 8-3 Husky lead.

Munoz hit a two-RBI double and ELAC had lead a 10-3 lead.

Santa Ana had rallies in the final two innings beginning with five runs scored with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Don’s pitcher Kasey Hutton hit a RBI triple, shortstop Desiree Hernandez and Graham each hit an RBI double and center fielder Mercedes Munoz hit a RBI single. ELAC had a 10-8 lead heading in the final inning.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Dons opened up with a single from third baseman Christina McCullough followed by a RBI double from Hernandez. ELAC’s lead was 10-9.

Eventually the bases were loaded with two outs. Both teams and the crowd were loud when Diosdado got Hutton to line out to center field. The Green and White celebrated their exciting win.

ELAC ace sophomore pitcher Byanka Diosdado, who led the state in most innings pitched last season, got the win.

The Huskies continue non-conference play at Mission College of Sylmar on Friday at 2 p.m.
