ELAC softball loses heartbreaker

ANTELOPE VALLEY, CA — East Los Angeles College lost a 5-3 heartbreaker to powerhouse Antelope Valley College. The Huskies outhit the Marauders, 12-7, but left 15 on base.

 ELAC was three outs away from victory against El Camino College, but lost 4-1 on Tuesday.

 ELAC opened the scoring in Antelope Valley with a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Sophomore shortstop Alizah Mayagoitia (Ramona Convent HS) hit an RBI single to right field to score sophomore left fielder Sujey Zamudio (Bell HS).

Zamudio, scored from second base. She was in position to score because she stole second base. The Huskies scored in the top of the fourth after sophomore catcher Joslyn Macias (Whittier HS) hit an RBI double.

Antelope Valley freshman center fielder Karlie Sabo hit a homerun over the center field fence, which tied the score, 2-2, in the bottom of the fourth.

ELAC rallied for a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth. Sophomore outfielder Kryssann Baltazar (Alhambra HS) hit an RBI single to center field.

Antelope Valley responded with a run in the bottom of the fifth and two runs in the sixth inning.

Other ELAC hits came from Mayagoitia who doubled, sophomore pitcher Byanka Diosdado (Schurr HS) who singled three times and third freshman baseman Julie Muñoz (Warren HS) who twice singled.

In addition, Baltazar, sophomore second baseman Breanna Takenaka (Los Altos HS) and sophomore first baseman Ashley Day (Alhambra HS) each slammed a hit.

 Against El Camino, the Falcons rallied with four runs in the top of the 7th inning for the win in front of another large ELAC home crowd.

ELAC outhit the Falcons 10-7. Freshman third baseman Griselda Vasquez (Bell HS), Diosdado, and Day hit two singles each.

Zamudio, Munoz, Takenaka and Mayagoitia each singled for ELAC. Mayagoitia had the Huskies only RBI.

The Huskies (1-9, 0-3) play South Coast Conference contests this week at Cerritos College (13-4, 3-1) on Tuesday and at El Camino-Compton Center (0-10, 0-3) on Thursday. Both games begin at 3 p.m.

ELAC also plays four games this weekend in Huntington Beach at the Golden West College Tournament. On Saturday, the Huskies meet Santa Barbara City College (8-4) at 11 a.m. and San Bernardino Valley College (5-13) at 3 p.m. 

The Huskies continue tournament play on Sunday with a rematch against Antelope Valley College (6-5) at 3 p.m. and a rematch against host Golden West (2-10) at 7 p.m. Golden West defeated ELAC 6-5 on Feb. 8.
