ELAC softball splits two SCC games

MONTEREY, CA — The East Los Angeles College Huskies softball team split two South Coast Conference home games this week defeating Long Beach City College, 6-3, yesterday and losing 5-1 to Pasadena City College today.

The Huskies have won four out of their past six games.

In the hitting slugfest against Pasadena (11-8, 6-2), ELAC (6-13, 2-6) scored first – in the bottom of the third inning.

ELAC sophomore center fielder Sidney Alaniz (El Rancho HS) singled to second base. Freshman right fielder Julie Muñoz (Warren HS) grounded out with a sacrifice bunt and Alaniz advanced to second.

Sophomore second baseman Breanna Takenaka (Los Altos HS) slammed an RBI single to center field and ELAC led 1-0.

In the fourth inning, Pasadena sophomore third baseman and former Elan, Raeleen Fuentes, hit a two-run home run over the left field fence and Pasadena led 2-1, a lead they would not relinquish.

Fuentes pitched on the 2013-14 ELAC SCC championship team. In the fifth inning, Fuentes took the mound. She gave up six hits to the Huskies in scoreless relief.

Huskies sophomore pitcher Byanka Diosdado (Schurr HS) pitched 4.2 innings, had seven strikeouts, and got the loss.

The Huskies outhit Pasadena 11-9 led by catcher Joslyn Macias (Whittier HS) who hit three singles. Hitting two singles each were Takenaka, Alaniz and shortstop Alizah Mayagoitia (Ramona Convent HS). Diosdado pounded a double.

In the three-run win against Long Beach (10-9, 3-4), ELAC won in dramatic style. Sophomore designated player Ashley Day (Alhambra HS) powered a 3-run homerun in the bottom of the seventh inning.

The Huskies outhit the Vikings 10-4 led by Day who also singled and Takenaka who hit three singles.

Hitting one single each were Macias, Mayagoitia, freshman pitcher Griselda Vasquez (Bell HS), left fielder Sujey Zamudio (Bell HS) and freshman first baseman Maddie Roberts (Alliance Tennenbaum Family Technology HS).

Diosdado pitched the final three innings, threw three strikeouts, and got the win. Vasquez pitched the first four innings.

The Huskies play six-consecutive road games beginning tomorrow at Moorpark College (11-3) at 1 p.m.
