Huskies softball wins eighth game in last 10

PASADENA, CA — The East Los Angeles College softball team overpowered Pasadena City College with a 14-hit attack in a 12-4 South Coast Conference win at Robinson Park.

The Huskies (14-18, 6-9) won their fourth SCC game out of their previous five while the Lancers (18-15, 8-8) lost their fourth of their last five SCC games.

ELAC freshman center fielder Alexis Lozaro singled to center field in the top of the first, but the Huskies followed with straight outs.

In the bottom of the inning, Lancer freshman shortstop Karina Moreno (Glendale HS) singled to center field followed with two Huskies’ errors. ELAC sophomore pitcher Byanka Diosdado (Schurr HS) pitched the Huskies out of the jam. Pasadena City could not return the favor in the second.

ELAC designated player Julie Munoz walked to open the second followed with the Huskies slamming a season-high five consecutive hits.

Diosdado singled to left field, freshman third baseman Madalyn Roberts (Alliance Tennenbaum Family Tech HS) singled to right field, sophomore left fielder Sujey Zamudio (Bell HS) singled to right center for two RBIs, and ELAC led 2-0.

Shortstop Alizah Mayagoitia (Ramona Convent High School) then singled to right field, Lozaro singled to center field (RBI), sophomore catcher Joslyn Macias (Whittier HS) walked followed by a sophomore Ashley Day (Alhambra HS) ground out to second base. After another out, Munoz doubled to left field with two RBIs.

ELAC scored a season-high seven runs in one inning and led 7-0. Previously, ELAC scored six runs in one inning three times this year.

The ELAC offense continued its hot hitting in the third. The Huskies singled four-consecutive times during a six-hit inning that scored five runs; four unearned off a Lancer error.

Roberts singled to center field and was replaced by freshman pinch runner Madelynn Nunez (Schurr HS) followed by a Husky out. Mayagoitia singled and Lozaro struck out. The Husky bats then rumbled before the third out.

Day singled up the middle; freshman right fielder/pitcher Griselda Vasquez (Bell HS) singled to right field (RBI), Munoz singled to right field (RBI) and Diosdado singled to left field (RBI). It was 12-0 ELAC.

Pasadena scored a run in the bottom of the third with Diosdado pitching.

Vasquez replace Diosdado as the ELAC pitcher in the fourth inning. The Lancers added three runs in the fourth off two hits that included a sophomore Holly Riker-Sloan (Gahr HS) double down the left line.

Diosdado returned to the mound and pitched a scoreless fifth inning. The game ended after five innings (Mercy rule).

Diosdado, who threw seven strikeouts, was the winning pitcher. Lozaro led the ELAC offense with three singles. Munoz hit a double, a single and had three RBIs for the Huskies.

The three hottest teams in the SCC, all winners of 8 of their previous 10 games, meet next week.

ELAC hosts El Camino College (20-11, 10-5) on Tuesday, April 12 at 3 p.m. and hosts the state’s No 7-ranked Mt. SAC (25-4, 13-2) on Wednesday, April 13 at 3 p.m.
