ELAC softball splits against top SCC teams

MONTEREY PARK, CA — The East Los Angeles College softball team defeated El Camino College 4-3 yesterday to win seven of its last eight games then lost 10-2 today to Mt. San Antonio College.

The Huskies, 15-19 overall and 7-10 in the SCC stopped El Camino’s (22-12, 11-6) six game win streak while Mt. SAC (28-4, 15-2) ended ELAC’s three-game win streak.

In the loss to Mt. SAC today, the game ended after five innings because of the mercy rule. Mt. SAC outhit the Huskies 10-4. ELAC committed three errors.

ELAC sophomore pitcher Byanka Diosdado (Schurr HS) hit a solo home run and recorded the loss in three innings on the mound. She is 11-13 on the season. Freshman right fielder/pitcher Griselda Vasquez (Bell HS) doubled and pitched the final two innings.

Other ELAC hits came from sophomore catcher Joslyn Macias (California HS) and left fielder Sujey Zamudio (Bell HS).

Defense was key in the one-run 4-3 win against El Camino at home. The Huskies were outhit 9-5 and committed two errors to El Camino’s one.

El Camino led 2-0 after the first frame. ELAC answered in the bottom of the inning with three runs. The Huskies added a run in the second and El Camino added one in the third.

Winning pitcher Diosdado (11-12) pitched four scoreless innings and threw five strikes. Vasquez pitched the last 1.1 innings and recorded the save.

Sophomore first baseman Ashley Day (Alhambra HS) singled twice with two RBIs.

Other singles came from Diosdado (two RBIs), freshman third baseman Madalyn Roberts (Alliance Tennenbaum Family Tech HS) and sophomore shortstop Alizah Mayagoitia (Ramona Convent High School).

ELAC closes its SCC three-game series rubber match with Pasadena City College tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Robinson Park, 1081 N. Fair Oaks Avenue in Pasadena.
