ELAC Softball Begins with a 5-4 Victory

 

MONTEREY PARK, CA -- The East Los Angeles College softball team won its opening game of the season 5-4 today over Los Angeles Mission College at home.

It was the third straight year that the Huskies won their season opener. The game was moved to ELAC this morning due to flooding on the Mission softball field.

ELAC was outhit 11-7, but its defense played error free ball while Mission committed four errors.

The Huskies put up two runs in the second inning and added three in the fourth enroute to the win. Freshman pitcher Majisty Shomo (Alhambra / Century High School) picked up the win.

After the Huskies led 2-0 after two, Mission followed with a run in the third and ELAC led 2-1. Each team had three-run innings. ELAC led 5-1 after four and Mission cut the score to one run, 5-4, in the top of the sixth. The Husky pitching and defense closed out for the win.

Left fielder Dominique De Alba (Bell Gardens HS) led the Husky bats with a batting average of .667. She pounded two hits and brought in an RBI. Frist baseman Jessica Hernandez also smashed two singles for ELAC.

Three Huskies each singled, sophomore short stop Angelina Gonzales (Gabrielino HS), who added two RBI’s, sophomore pitcher Samantha Alvarado (Edgewood HS), who had an RBI, and Shomo who finished with a batting average of .500. Mission had three batters who each singled twice.

Shomo pitched 2.2 innings, allowed six hits and three runs. Alvarado also pitched 2.2 innings and gave up three hits and finished with an earned run average of 2.63.

Freshman pitcher Angelita Villalvazo (Edison HS) pitched the final 1.2 innings and struck out two.

ELAC (1-0) continues play with a home game against powerhouse Santa Ana College (0-0) on Thursday at 5 p.m.
