Alvarado Gets Second Win in 6-4 Victory Over Long Beach
MONTEREY PARK, CA — The East Los Angeles College softball team won 6-4 over Long Beach City College in a home game with sophomore pitcher Samantha Alvarado earning her second win in two tries.
Alvarado, 2-0 on the season, pitched 3.2 innings and fanned two Vikings.
ELAC improves to 3-2 overall and Long Beach drops to 6-6.
Down 3-1 after four innings, the Huskies rallied for a three-run inning burst in the fifth and led 4-3.
Alvarado retired the side in the sixth. ELAC added two insurance runs in the bottom of half of the inning and led 6-3. Long Beach came back in the seventh to pull within two, down 6-4, but Alvarado shut the door on the Vikings for the Husky win.

Sophomore short stop Angelina Gonzales (Gabrielino High School) tripled, doubled and singled (2 RBIs) today and was a perfect three-for-three at bat. Gonzales is hitting a blistering .533 batting average to date and has hit a total of two doubles, five singles and a triple in 15 tries.
Sophomore left fielder Dominique De Alba (Bell Gardens HS) singled twice (2 RBIs). Sophomore first baseman Jessica Hernandez (South El Monte HS) tripled (RBI).
Three Huskies singled, freshman third baseman Julie Granadeno (LA Marshall HS) who had an RBI, sophomore second baseman Destiny Avena (St. Paul HS) and sophomore right fielder Emily Sanchez (Schurr HS).
Sophomore right fielder Alijah Vega (Artesia HS) led the Viking swings with three singles (RBI). Long Beach sophomore Alissa Cienfuegos (Carson HS), who took the loss, pitched the distance and struck out seven.
ELAC lost their first shutout in a year 8-0 to Los Angeles Harbor College (3-1) last Thursday. Call it revenge for ELAC’s 19-0 and 12-0 shutouts over Harbor last season.
ELAC’s best scoring opportunity was in the fourth inning when they loaded the bases after one out. A double play quickly ended the rally.
Sophomore right fielder Natalie Acosta (Bell HS) doubled for the Huskies. Two Huskies singled, Hernandez and left fielder Samantha Alvarado (Edgewood HS).
Freshman pitcher Majisty Shomo (Alhambra / Century HS) took the loss and stands 1-2 overall. In four innings on the mound, she gave up seven hits, four runs, but had season high four strikeouts.
ELAC plays at Compton College (3-5) in a non-conference game on Thursday at 3 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. The Huskies play four tournament games, two each day, at the Mt. San Jacinto College President’s Day Eagle Tournament.
