Huskies Rally for Split in 16-Team Tournament
SAN JACINTO, CA — The East Los Angeles College softball team rallied for a four-game split in the Mt. San Jacinto College President’s Day Eagle Tournament, one of the largest in the state.
After an 0-2 start from yesterday’s games at Wheatfield Park in Menifee, the Mt. San Jacinto home softball field, the Huskies stormed back with two wins today. ELAC took a 2-1 shocker of a win over Santa Barbara City College and won 11-5 against Grossmont College in the nightcap.
The first game today was a nail biter pitching duel from start to finish. ELAC freshman pitcher Majisty Shomo (Alhambra / Century High School) pitched the distance in the win, allowed only three hits and fanned two Vaqueros. She earned her second win and stands 2-3 overall.
The Huskies, 6-4 overall, opened the score with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Santa Barbara (7-6) tied it at 1-1 an inning later. ELAC punched a run across the plate in the fifth inning and the Husky bench noise drowned out the stadium until they got the win an inning and-a-half later.
ELAC outhit Santa Barbara eight to three. Sophomore center fielder Mone't Manning (Northview HS), who sizzles at the plate even on a cold day, singled twice (2 RBIs). Sophomore short stop Angelina Gonzales (Gabrielino HS) doubled.
Sophomore right fielder Dominique De Alba (Bell Gardens HS) singled twice. Three other Huskies singled, sophomore catcher Ralynda Delarea (Glendale HS), freshman Angelita Villalvazo (Stockton / Edison HS) and sophomore third baseman Julie Granadeno (LA Marshall HS).
The 8-run win, 11-hit slam fest over Grossmont (1-8-1) was aided by four errors from the Griffins. Sophomore second baseman Destiny Avena (St. Paul HS), who can smack ‘em, tripled (3 RBIs), Delarea singled twice (3 RBIs) and Gonzales doubled (2 RBIs). First baseman Jessica Hernandez (South El Monte HS), who likes producing bomb fests deep into the field while at bat, doubled and singled (RBI).
Four other Huskies singled, Acosta (RBI), De Alba (RBI), second baseman Sara Serrano (Baldwin Park / Sierra Vista High School) and Granadeno.
In a 13-11 heartbreak loss yesterday against Los Angeles Valley College, the Huskies outhit the Lady Monarchs 16-15. Valley had four errors, but ELAC’s offensive timing didn’t help take advantage of the miscues. Valley won the game on the mound and with key hits. Hanna Moulton pitched the distance and struck out two Huskies.
The Husky fireworks were led with Manning who homered, tripled and singled (3 RBIs). Granadeno tripled and doubled (3 RBIs) while Gonzales doubled and singled (2 RBIs). Three Huskies singled twice, De Alba (RBI), Hernandez and sophomore left fielder Samantha Alvarado (Edgewood HS). Two Huskies smacked singles, Delarea and sophomore designated player Emily Sanchez (Schurr HS).
The Huskies lost 17-3 to No. 10 3CFCA SoCal-ranked Ventura College (10-3) and managed five hits and a home run. ELAC gave the game away, if there’s such a thing, with five errors. Alvarado (2-2) took the loss.
Granadeno homered with one on, Avena singled (RBI) and four other Huskies singled, Manning, Sanchez, De Alba and Hernandez.

ELAC opens South Coast Conference North Division play with home game on Tuesday against No. 6 Pasadena City College (6-6) and No. 4 state-ranked Mt. San Antonio College (10-1) on Thursday.
