ELAC Softball loses 2-1 to No. 9 Riverside
RIVERSIDE, CA — The East Los Angeles College softball team lost 2-1 at the Evans Sports Complex to No. 9 state-ranked Riverside City College even though they outhit the Tigers 7-5.
The Huskies played their sixth game against a ranked team today, third against a state-ranked team. The heartbreak loss was proof again the Huskies can play with anyone in the state. They also played tough in a 3-1 loss to No. 4 Mt. San Antonio College.
The sixth inning was the difference in today’s game in front of a large crowd. After an out, the Huskies doubled and singled. ELAC did not capitalize and followed with two quick outs and left two on. Without any hits, Riverside scored unearned in the bottom half of the inning aided by a Husky error.
The only other scoring was in the second inning. ELAC singled twice, one a bunt, and scored unearned on aided by an error from Riverside. The Tigers plated a home run in the bottom of the inning.

Sophomore left fielder Samantha Alvarado (Edgewood HS) and freshman third baseman Julie Granadeno (LA Marshall HS) led the Husky bats. Alvarado doubled and singled. Granadeno singled twice.
Three ELAC sophomores each singled—short stop Angelina Gonzales (Gabrielino HS), second baseman Destiny Avena (St. Paul HS) and center fielder Mone't Manning (Northview HS) who leads the team with a .425 batting average.
Freshman pitcher Majisty Shomo (Alhambra / Century HS) had a good effort on the mound in the loss. Shomo, 2-6 overall, pitched the distance and gave up five scattered hits.
Two Riverside sophomores led the Tigers. Catcher Aeriel Carlson (Citrus Valley HS) homered and teammate Symphony Hall (6-1) was the winning pitcher. In 6.1 innings, she only struck out one Husky.
The Huskies had a disappointing showing at No. 8 Southern California-ranked Antelope Valley College (10-6) with a 13-4 mercy rule loss on Friday.
The Huskies opened the game with two runs off two hits. Sophomore first baseman Jessica Hernandez (South El Monte HS) singled and Alvarado doubled. Antelope Valley responded with a seven-run bottom half from four hits, which included a grand slam home run.
The Huskies trimmed the score to 7-4 after they scored two runs in the top of the third from a hit by Hernandez and three Antelope Valley errors. The Marauders followed with two 3-run innings.
Designated hitter Alvarado doubled and singled and had two RBIs. Hernandez singled twice and finished with an RBI. Gonzales pounded a single.
Shomo took the loss. She gave up four runs before the first out of the game. Also on the mound, Alvarado gave up two runs before the first out. Freshman pitcher Angelita Villalvazo (Stockton / Edison HS) stepped in and pitched the distance. She gave up seven runs but fanned three Marauders.
Freshman designated player Ashley Fiorelli (Paraclete HS) hit the grand slam for the Marauders and sophomore pitcher Taylor Roberts (1-0), who got the win, homered (3 RBIs). It was Taylor’s fifth homerun of the season, which is the third most in the state.
ELAC, 6-8 overall and 0-2 in the South Coast Conference North Division, hosts Cerritos College in a non-conference game tomorrow at 3 p.m. They Huskies are on the road at SCC North leader Chaffey College (10-6, 2-0) on Thursday.
The Huskies will play seven more ranked teams this season including a home game against Citrus College on Friday. Hopefully the strong schedule will pay off with a playoff bid.
