Softball Wins 9-0; Three-Way Tie for Second

WHITTIER, CA — The East Los Angeles College softball team passed a big test with its second straight South Coast Conference North Division win, a 9-0 victory over Rio Hondo College.

It was ELAC’s first mercy rule win and couldn’t have come at a better time. The shutout victory moved the Huskies into a three-way tie for second place in the conference after an 0-2 start.

The Huskies are tied with Chaffey and Pasadena City colleges who are all two games behind conference leading Mt. San Antonio College who is No. 4 state-ranked.

The Huskies began the top of the first inning against Rio Hondo with two singles, which led to a 2-0 lead and the bases loaded. The Rio Hondo pitcher got two consecutive outs. ELAC right fielder Dominique De Alba (Bell Gardens HS) followed with a 2-RBI single and ELAC led 4-0.

In the third, ELAC scored two runs off two singles and a little help from a Rio Hondo error and led 6-0. In the fourth inning, two Huskies each doubled after an initial walk. Freshman pinch hitter Jessica Ramirez grounded out to the short stop (RBI) and ELAC tallied a 9-0 lead.

ELAC freshman pitcher Angelita Villalvazo (Stockton / Edison HS) was put on the mound in the bottom of the inning and allowed a hit and a walk, but no runs. She retired the side in the following inning and recorded the save. Villalvazo finished with one strike.

Freshman Kimberly Rodriguez (Franklin High School) was the winning pitcher. It was her first start. Rodriguez has a perfect ERA of 0.00 and struck out one in three innings of work.

The Huskies smashed 12 hits for the second straight game. Five ELAC sophomores lit up the field. Center fielder Mone't Manning (Northview HS) doubled, singled and had two runs batted in. She leads the Huskies with a .463 batting average.

De Alba singled in two RBIs. Left fielder Samantha Alvarado (Edgewood HS) doubled and singled (RBI), while short stop Angelina Gonzales (Gabrielino HS) and catcher Ralynda Delarea (Glendale HS) each singled twice (RBI each).

Next Up

ELAC, 8-8 overall and 2-2 in SCC North play, takes a break from conference play with an important game at No. 8 state-ranked El Camino College (14-5).

El Camino has an 8-game win streak, but the Huskies have been a hot hitting team for 10 days. The difference in the game will probably be the pitching.

The Huskies follow with a 3-way Mini on Saturday at home. ELAC plays Ventura College (12-5) at 1 p.m., Ventura meets Fullerton at 3 p.m. and ELAC plays the nightcap against Fullerton College (6-9) beginning at 5 p.m.
