ELAC Huskies Softball Wins 18-4 over Mt. San Jacinto

GLENDALE, CA — The East Los Angeles College Huskies softball team, which is in a dogfight to earn a playoff berth, won 18-4 over Mt. San Jacinto College at home today.

In the first of three key games this week, the Huskies outhit Mt. San Jacinto 16-5. The Huskies won their second mercy rule non-conference victory of the season.

Freshman pitcher Angelita Villalvazo (Stockton, CA / Edison High School) pitched the distance and earned her second straight win. She improves to 3-3 overall and struck out a season-high nine.

The Huskies scored four runs in the first inning, three in the second and four in the third after the Eagles scored three runs in the top half of the third. ELAC led 11-3.

As the lights came on in the fourth inning, the Huskies scored seven runs and dimmed the hopes of any comeback from the Eagles. Mt. San Jacinto, however, added a run in the fifth.

Seven Huskies had hits in the slam fest. Sophomore center fielder Mone't Manning (Northview High School) was 3-for-3. She homered and singled twice with three runs batted in. Manning is ranked No. 6 in the state with a .525 batting average. She leads the South Coast Conference North in three categories, the top batting average, the most RBIs (37) and has the most home runs (9).

Sophomore left fielder Dominique De Alba (Bell Gardens HS) tripled and singled twice with 3 RBIs, sophomore first baseman Jessica Hernandez (South El Monte HS) doubled twice and singled twice (2 RBIs).

Sophomore second baseman Samantha Alvarado (Edgewood HS) tripled and singled (2 RBIs)., sophomore second baseman Destiny Avena (St. Paul HS) doubled and singled (2 RBIs), sophomore third baseman Julie Granadeno (LA Marshall HS) had a 2-RBI single and sophomore short stop Angelina Gonzales (Gabrielino HS) had a RBI double.

The Huskies, 18-15 overall and 3-5 in the SCC North, are on the road for the rubber-match of a key SCC North series at Chaffey College (24-12, 6-4) on Thursday at 3 p.m. The Huskies won the fist meeting 10-7 scoring seven runs in the final inning and Chaffey won two weeks ago, 13-3.

ELAC hosts its final regular season home game finale against Cerritos College (19-14) on Friday at 5 p.m.
