Each Lady Husky scores in 87-48 win

LOS ANGELES, CA — Each of the East Los Angeles College women’s basketball team members scored in an 87-48 win against Los Angeles Southwest College in the first of five non-conference divisional crossover games.

Rather than winning by an even larger margin, ELAC Coach Bruce Turner emptied the bench throughout the game, yet still led 22-5 after the first quarter and 44-18 after the second.

The bench scored 55 points leading the Huskies to a 67-30 third quarter lead and the 39 point win. The bench, also cashed in on their court time with 30 of ELAC’s 57 rebounds, 15 of ELAC’s 27 assists, 12-of-19 Husky steals and four of ELAC’s five three-point shots.

The taller starters blocked four of the five Husky blocked shots. Starting 6-foot 6-inch freshman center Anastasia Tsybaeva (Burbank High School) had a team-high three blocked shots. She leads the Huskies with 18 blocked shots on the season.

ELAC guards led the Huskies in scoring. Freshman Jasmin Leal (Roosevelt HS) came off the bench and scored 13 points, freshman Tiffani Martinez (Montebello HS) also scored 13 points and freshman Alissa Gomez (Roosevelt HS) scored 10.

Southwest center Taiana Puloka scored the games only double-double with 17 points and 17 rebounds. Her teammate point guard Winter Grant scored 15 points. Lady Cougar center Joanna Powdrell pulled down 10 rebounds.

Leal scored three of ELAC’s five three-point baskets. The Lady Cougars had four attempts from beyond the arc, but did not connect.

Tsybaeva pulled in eight rebounds. Grabbing seven rebounds each for the Huskies were sophomore forward Jessica Sanchez (Roosevelt HS), and freshman guard Kamara Smith (Carson HS).

Freshman guard Brianne Cheatum (Canyon Springs HS) led the Huskies in assists with five.

Other South Coast Conference North Division results today had Mt. San Antonio College (17-1) winning 76-46 at El Camino College (8-8), El Camino-Compton Center (1-12) losing 77-32 to Cerritos College (13-5) and Los Angeles Trade Tech College (7-7) winning 95-42 against Los Angeles Harbor College (1-11).

The state’s No. 16-ranked ELAC (12-5) will face No. 5 Long Beach City College (14-2) in the South Gym on Friday at 5 p.m.
