ELAC's balanced attack results in big win
WILMINGTON, CA — The East Los Angeles College women’s basketball team won its fourth consecutive game with a 96-40 defeat of Los Angeles Harbor College in a non-conference divisional crossover game.
The Huskies, from the South Coast Conference North Division, improved to 14-5 on the season. Harbor, from the SCC South Division, fell to 1-13 overall.
The Huskies put together a balanced attack that included a season-high 37 assists (25 from the bench). The Huskies also had 21 steals with 15 coming from the bench.
ELAC led 23-6 after the first period and 42-18 at the half. ELAC led 74-18 after three quarters.
Sophomore forward Jessica Sanchez (Roosevelt HS) came off the bench and had a double-double. Sanchez scored 14 points and hauled in 14 rebounds, half of them off of the offensive boards.
ELAC freshman center Anastasia Tsybaeva (Burbank High School) scored a season high 23 points and slammed back five rebounds.
Give credit to the Seahawks’ effort that included outshooting the Huskies at the free throw line, 50 per cent (6-of-12) to the Huskies’ 35.3 percent (6-of-17).
The Southwest women’s basketball program is in its third season after a six year hiatus.
Four ELAC guards scored in double figures. Freshmen Brianne Cheatum (Canyon Springs HS) scored 12 points, Tiffani Martinez (Montebello HS) scored 11 and Alissa Gomez (Roosevelt HS) had 10. Sophomore Yasmine Tweedy (Chesterfield, VA Manchester HS) also scored 10 points.
Southwest scoring was led by forward Jaynie San Miguel who scored 13 points and guard Tajah Davies who scored 12.
Martinez connected on an ELAC team-high three 3-pointers. She is the 6th best 3-point shooter in the state according to CCCAA stats.
Gomez had a team-high four assists for the Huskies. Gomez and Tweedy had seven assists each. Tweedy’s aggressive defensive play contributed to her team-high five steals.
ELAC will host El Camino College (9-9) on Friday at 5 p.m. El Camino lost a 65-64 squeaker to Pasadena City College (11-8).
