No. 1 women’s basketball wins 68-41

WHITTIER, CA — The No. 1-ranked East Los Angeles College women’s basketball team bounced back from its loss to No. 3 Mt. SAC with a 68-41 win at Rio Hondo College in South Coast Conference North Division play.

The Huskies and Roadrunners renewed their once longtime conference rivalry. Rio Hondo joined the SCC North this season from now defunct Foothill Conference, which they joined in 1988. Prior to that, ELAC and Rio Hondo were rivals in the now disbanded Southern California Conference.

With the win, the Huskies improve to 18-2 overall and 1-1 in the SCC North. Rio Hondo falls to 4-15 and 0-2.

The Huskies led 15-6 after the first period even though they were outrebounded 15-6.

Sophomore guard Tiffani Martinez (Montebello High School) scored nine points during this time and sophomore center Anastasia Tsybaeva (Burbank HS) had two of her three blocked shots.

The Huskies outrebound Rio Hondo 44-24 the remainder of the game.

The Huskies outscored the Roadrunners 15-6 in the second period to take a 30-12 lead into the locker room. Freshman guard Monica Garcia (Garfield HS) and sophomore guard Allissa Gomez (Roosevelt HS) scored seven and six points, respectively by halftime.

The Huskies opened the third quarter scoring with a 6-2 run and led 36-14 after freshman guard Farrah Castillo (Rowland HS) made a layup (assist Gomez) with 6:13 left in the period. Rio Hondo responded with a 9-0 run, its biggest run of the night.

The Husky bench outscored Rio Hondo during the third period 11-3. Castillo made a 3-point jump shot to close out the third quarter scoring and ELAC led 47-26 heading into the final frame.

Garcia scored seven of her game-high 18 points in the final quarter, six in the paint. Garcia had 11 rebounds for the games only double double.

Martinez scored 12 points for the Huskies and had three steals. Gomez scored 11 points, had three steals and a game-high five assists.  Castillo scored seven points and had seven rebounds.

The Huskies outrebounded their longtime rivals, 50-39, with 24 of those rebounds off the offensive boards. ELAC outscored Rio Hondo 14-0 with fast break points.

In other SCC North action, No. 14 LA Trade Tech College (18-3, 2-0) won 88-55 against Chaffey College (11-9, 1-1) and No. 3 Mt. SAC (21-1, 2-0) won 56-47 against No. 12 Pasadena City College (16-5, 0-2).
