ELAC women’s basketball wins tourney 79-55 over host West L.A. College

CULVER CITY, Calif. — Living up to its No. 8-Southern Region spot, East Los Angeles College defeated No. 14 West Los Angeles College 79-55 in the Wild West Shootout title at “The Den” in the Cougars house.

The Lady Huskies, 5-1 overall, won their 15th tournament championship since 2012. ELAC played in 20 tournament title games since then compiling 136 wins.

ELAC sophomore guard Jennifer Pool (Legacy HS) was named the Wild West Shootout MVP. Sophomore guard Jaelynn Curley (AZ / Ganado HS) was also named to the All-Tournament Team.

Pool tallied 25 tourney points, eight rebounds with six from the offensive boards, was a perfect 6-of-6 from the line, had a team-high 11 assists and a team-high nine steals. Pool averages 4.2 steals per game, 9th best in the state. In the 76-57 first-round win over No. 10 L.A. Valley College, Pool stole the ball on the Monarch’s first possession.

Curley totaled a team-high 48 tourney points scoring a team-high 15 today adding nine rebounds.She was 13-of-27 from long range in the tournament. Curley averages three 3-pointers per game from 7.8 attempts, 8th best in the state from more than 900 women.

The Huskies led 21-19 after the first quarter. There were 10 lead changes and three ties when freshman Valerie Godinez made a layup for ELAC lead less than a minute into the second quarter. ELAC led 23-21, a lead the Huskies would not relinquish.

PAW TRACKS

Freshman forward Jadis Watson(Lancaster HS) came off the bench and led the Huskies today with a double double—18 points and 14 rebounds. She was 9-of-17 from the field and had eight rebounds from the offensive boards. Watson amassed 38 tournament points and 26 rebounds. Sophomore guard Dominique Godbolt (Fairfax HS) scored in double digits for the fourth time this season today with 15 points. She also had had a blocked shot, which got the crowd hollering. Godbolt tallied 33 tournament points, 13 rebounds, six assists and six steals.

Freshman guard Adriana Gonzalez (St. Paul HS) scored six points today. Gonzalez was another Husky that put forward a monster performance with 33 tourney points, seven 3-points shots and was a perfect 4-for-4 at the free throw line.

Other impressive stats came from freshman forward Zemeris Wallace (Lancaster HS) with 14 tourney rebounds, eight on offense and from sophomore forward Breanna Hyde (Sherman Oaks CES) with 11 tourney rebounds with seven from the offense glass. Freshman guard Citlaly Davalos (Legacy HS) totaled four assists, two steals and had a blocked shot.

The Huskies are deep and averaged 18 1/2 minutes per each of the 11-member team.

UP NEXT

ELAC plays in the Palomar College Comet Classic Tournament next week. It is the fourth-straight tournament for the Lady Huskies that includes four ranked teams.

In a rematch of today’s Wild West Shootout championship game, ELAC faces West L.A. in the first round at Palomar, Friday, Nov. 16 at 3 p.m. in the second game of a quadruple header. The tournament runs through Sunday.
