Lady Huskies ranked No. 5 in first State Poll

MONTEREY PARK, Calif. The East Los Angeles College Lady Huskies basketball team is No. 5-ranked in the initial state poll of the season by the California Community College Women’s Basketball Coaches Association.

ELAC has the toughest schedule in the state that includes 23 games against ranked teams, 16 from the state poll.

The Lady Huskies compete in the toughest conference in the state. The South Coast Conference North Division has five of its six teams currently ranked in the state poll. This includes ELAC, 9-3 overall, Pasadena City (8-1), L.A. Trade Tech (6-1), Rio Hondo (6-2) and Mt. San Antonio (6-3) colleges.

The Lady Huskies are so deep that ELAC head coach Bruce Turner plays his entire team in every game.

Several of ELAC’s team stats average in the State’s Top-Ten, including field goal percentage, 364-of-878, which second best in the state and free throws made, 148 of-262, which is third best in the state.

Although every one of the Lady Huskies stand out in different categories, top statewide stats come from sophomore guards, Jennifer Pool (Legacy High School), Dominique Godbolt (Fairfax HS) and Jaelynn Curley (Ganado, AZ / Ganado HS).

Pool averages 4.1 steals per game, ninth best in the state from more than 700 women. She averages 5.1 assists per game, 17th best. Godbolt has recorded five double doubles this season and is one of the state leaders in this category. She totaled 19 last year. Curley shoots 2.8-of-7.5 three-point baskets per game, 11th best in the state.

ELAC’s first home game of the season is against Imperial Valley College (2-6) Dec. 27 at 5 p.m.

The Lady Huskies host their annual Husky Classic Tournament, Thursday to Saturday, Dec. 27-29.
