Day 1 Recap of Okawa Classic

Day 1 Recap of Okawa Classic

by Cerwin D Haynes

The East Los Angeles College annual women's basketball tournament - the Okawa Classic - has made a successful return, with Day 1 in the books.

Unfortunately for the host team Huskies, they'll have to wait until tomorrow to put on in front of the home crowd. Their scheduled opponent for today, the West LA College Wildcats, were forced to back out of the Classic due to Covid concerns. This forced ELAC to sit out on today's action and reduce the day's docket to a doubleheader.

Moorpark College 66, College of the Canyons 53

  • Raiders' PG Ashley Orozco led all scorers with 19 points while pitching in five assists and five rebounds as Moorpark (9-2) outshot Canyons (10-2) from the field and free-throw line.
    • NOTE: Canyons head coach Greg Herrick recently picked up his 600th career win when they beat Rio Hondo on Dec 17th.

Riverside 78, Mission 69

  • Neveah Manning and Neiya Hamilton each scored 22 points to lead the Tigers (6-6) over the Saints, who made the long road trip from Santa Clara to play this week here at Monterey Park.

Day Two of the Classic is tomorrow. Three games to be played at 1pm, 3pm and 5pm. Admission is free, and SportsnetUSA.net will stream the games live.

HUSKY BITS

  • With West LA backing out, it caused a shuffle in the scheduling. Thankfully, two new teams answered the call at the last minute to join in on the action: Golden West, who will play tomorrow; and Riverside, who played today and will likely play tomorrow as well as Wednesday.
  • The Huskies are still scheduled to play at 5pm tomorrow (Canyons) and Wednesday (Moorpark).
