Relentless Rebounding Plus Hot Third Quarter Leads to Easy Pack Win at ECC

by Cerwin D Haynes

Continuing to build upon the momentum that started with the Okawa Classic, East Los Angeles College women's basketball put their four-game win streak on the line down in Torrance against the winless El Camino College Warriors.

Thanks to dominating the glass on both ends of the court, dogged defense and a scorching-hot third quarter, the Huskies (9-9) dominated the second half and cruised to a 78-38 victory. They've now won five in a row and appear to be peaking just in time for conference play, which begins next Friday versus Rio Hondo.

Five Huskies scored in double digits, including four of the five starters. Sophomore F/C Asiah Harris and sophomore G Derricka Millinghaus both had a game-high 17 points apiece.

The first half saw El Camino outshoot ELAC from the field 45.% to 26.8%, Yet, the road Green (actually they wore black tonight) went into the half up 34-22: By dominating the offensive glass and causing turnovers, East LA took a whopping 24 more shots in the half than El Camino. They took and made more shots.

Then the third quarter came, and they combined their first half tenacity with hot shooting, particularly from beyond the arc. Freshman PG Moriah Mosley drilled five three-pointers in the period for all of her 15 points in the game; the Huskies shot 6-10 from deep and 11-18 overall en route to a 30-point period while holding the host Warriors to eight points. Leading 64-30 going into the fourth quarter, head coach Bruce Turner was able to use all his bench players, who helped keep up the pressure until the end.

HUSKY BITS

  • Derricka Millinghaus grabbed 12 rebounds while Harris snagged 10.
  • ELAC assisted on 19 of their 28 made baskets.
  • Freshman G Fernanda Zuniga scored 13 points off the bench.
  • East LA had 20 steals en route to forcing 28 El Camino turnovers.
