Four Huskies Named to Women's Soccer All-SCC North Team

by Cerwin D Haynes

Despite a season full of struggle, the East Los Angeles College women's soccer team was rewarded for their perseverance by earning four All-SCC North selections today.

Rookie head coach Jessica Correll, who knew this season was more about laying a foundation versus simple wins and losses, was happy to have some of her players recognized. "This year posed many challenges," says Correll, "but the group of players I had were incredibly resilient and committed to the program through every obstacle."

All SCC-North First Team:

  • Azucena Vallecillo, Fr. Forward/MF

COACH SAYS: "Azucena (Suzy) Vallecillo was our most versatile player and was a key component in maintaining a competitive edge on the field. She played multiple positions, stepping into any position that the team needed her to play."

  • Michelle Ortiz, Fr. MF/GK, 61 saves

Ortiz was converted from a Midfielder to Goalkeeper in the middle of the season due to injuries and roster availability issues.

COACH SAYS: "Michelle Ortiz, who is typically a midfielder, stepped up for the team and played keeper for a large portion of this season and made 61 saves."

All SCC-North Second Team:

  • Kimberly Romero, East Los Angeles, Fr. Midfielder

COACH SAYS: "It is no surprise that our results this season were subpar, but in our last game against LA [City], we were able to nab our first goal - a small victory for our team, made by Kimberly Romero. Kim was our attacking mid and was determined to score by the end of our season."

  • Sara Rodriguez, East Los Angeles, Fr. Midfielder

COACH SAYS: "Like Suzy, Sara Rodriguez was a solid, utility player that could be placed just about anywhere on the field. She overcame injuries and pushed both herself and the team to never give up through her persistence on the field."
