ELAC Swim and Dive Wins First Dual Meet Against Chaffey College 122-110
PASADENA, CA — The East Los Angeles College women’s swim and dive team defeated Chaffey College in a double dual meet hosted by Pasadena City College at the PCC Aquatics Center today. ELAC defeated Chaffey for the third time this season but the first time in dual meet competition, 122-110, in today’s South Coast Conference meet. The Huskies previously outscored Chaffey in the SCC Pentathlon and the Mt. San Antonio College Invitational. The Huskies lost to Pasadena 158-85. Pasadena defeated Chaffey 153-81. The Huskies sport a freshman laden team with just one sophomore. Caitlyn Woo (Mark Keppel HS) won the 100-yard backstroke with a personal record of 1:07.03 minutes, highlighting the individual results for the Huskies. Woo bested favored Maryjane Martinez of Pasadena who placed second in 1:11.66. The Huskies won the final event of the day, the 400-yard free relay with a personal record for the second straight week. ELAC’s time was 46 seconds faster than second place Pasadena’s. Woo swam the first leg followed by Virginia Zia-Lopez (Mark Keppel HS), Elizabeth Melendrez (Mark Keppel HS) and sophomore Crystal Rubalcava (Schurr HS) in the final leg.
Event 1: 200 Medley Relay: ELAC placed second, 10 seconds behind Pasadena and 10 seconds faster than Chaffey with their third personal record in the 200-yard medley relay. It was Woo in the backstroke, Zia-Lopez in the breaststroke, Melendrez in the butterfly and Rubalcava in the final freestyle leg.
Event 3: 1,000 Freestyle: Two Huskies each swam to personal record, Rubalcava who took second-place and Melendrez who took third.
Event 5: 200 Free: Daniela Pastor (South Gate HS) placed fifth and Michelea Esparza (Los Angeles HS) placed sixth.
Event 7: 100 Back: Lizbeth Perez (Orthopedic Hospital Medical Magnet HS) placed fifth adding a personal record.
Event 9: 100 Breaststroke: Pastor placed fourth with a personal record.
Event 11: 200 Butterfly: Melendrez, who was dead even with Chaffey’s Destiney Talamantes after three laps, sprinted 12 seconds faster during the final 100 yards and won second place.
Event 13: 50 Free: Alejandra Gazpar (Maywood Academy HS) placed fourth in her initial 50-yard free of the season. Esparza placed seventh and had a personal record in the event for the third straight week.
Event 15: 1-Meter Dive: Zia-Lopez swam unopposed and with a score of 60.70 got the first place points for the Huskies.
Event 17: 100 Free: Gazpar placed sixth with a season best time. Esparza placed seventh and had a personal record in the event for the fifth straight meet.
Event 19: 200 Back: Perez placed eighth with a personal best in this event for the second time this season.
Event 21: 200 Breast: Zia-Lopez placed third with a personal record for the second time in three meets. Pastor took fifth place.
Event 23: 500 Free: Rubalcava place second. She has achieved a personal record in the 500 free each time she competes in the event. Kellie Ton (Mark Keppel HS), who competed in her initial 500 free two weeks ago, placed fifth in record time, a personal record. Ton defeated Pasadena’s Karina Mendoza by 12 seconds. Ton gradually increased her time over Mendoza to 11 seconds after 400 yards and kept the pace for the final 100 yards to the wall.
Event 25: 100 Butterfly: ELAC did not compete in the event.
Event 27: 200 IM: Woo placed an impressive second place sandwiched between two Pasadena women. Woo produced a season best time with a personal record her fourth of the day. Perez took fifth over Mt. SAC’s Jasmine Ramirez five seconds faster. Perez placed seventh.
