Back when East LA College head coach Dr. Elliott Walker took over the women's volleyball program, the team's annual win total was exceptionally low, and expectations were even lower. Those who were around to witness Dr. Walker's early years were happy that he increased the overall competitiveness of the program as well as the yearly win total. And yet, he has never had a team that could set it sights for the top of the SCC and also a state playoff berth.

That could all change this season.

Thanks to going 5-0 over the past seven days, ELAC has pushed its record to 10-1, their best start in program history.

To wit: last Wednesday during their home tri-match, ELAC beat West Hills Lemoore 3-1 and Chaffey 3-0. Playing the Eagles first, the Huskies won the first set 25-16 before dropping the second set 24-26. Sensing that his team was all not on the same page, Coach Walker sternly implored his women to sharpen their focus. They responded by not being seriously challenged again... not just for the rest of the afternoon, but for the rest of the week:

  • They won the next two sets 25-14 and 25-8, and then wasted little effort dispatching the Panthers 25-22, 25-7 and 25-13 (the last set allowed Dr. Walker to put in some of his freshmen bench players for live action).
  • Last Friday at Santa Monica College's quad, the Huskies made short work of LA Harbor 25-12, 25-9 and 25-15 in Game 1. In Game 2, the Pack had to work a bit harder again San Diego Miramar, but still took it in straight sets 25-17, 25-16 and 25-20.

On Monday, East began conference play at SCC and women's volleyball newcomer LA City College. As an established team facing a new program, the Huskies wasted little effort in beating the Bulldogs 25-6, 25-15 and 25-7.

The Pack has a six-game winning streak AND a 14-set winning streak going into tomorrow's big matchup against Mt. SAC in the "E"-rena on campus at 6pm.

HUSKY BITS

  • ELAC moved up three spots to #22 in the CCCWVCA State Top-25 while notching #12 in the SoCal rankings. Mt. SAC is #12 in the State, #7 in SoCal with a 5-4 record. A win tomorrow will show that the Green is ready to tangle with the state's perennial powers in the sport.
