At the start of South Coast Conference play last week, East Los Angeles College Women's Volleyball had to prove their hot start could withstand the rigors of conference play. Last year, the Huskies raced off to a 7-1 start before getting bogged down in SCC play. And this year's conference schedule is no cakewalk, with five SCC teams (including the Huskies) placed on last week's CCCWVCA State Top-25 Poll.

One of which, the Mount San Antonio College Mounties, came into Monterey Park last Wednesday having never tasted defeat against the Huskies in the history of both programs' existence. But then, a thrilling five-set victory for East LA against their opponents from Walnut sent a message loud and clear up and down the entire state: this team is for real.

Building off their cornerstone victory, the Pack then spent the weekend at LA Mission College for the 3rd Annual Eagles Invitational, where they would go 3-0 - including a grinding four-set win over the host LAMC Eagles - to earn first-place at the tourney and finish their week 5-0 (they beat LA City 25-6, 25-15, 25-7 on Monday September 11).

Sure enough, the State has taken notice: ELAC's 14 victories (14-1, 2-0) only trails Lassen College's 16 wins for most in California so far, with The Pack jumping a whopping 13 spots to #9 in this week's poll. It's East LA's highest ranking in program history to go along with the best start in program history.

Yet, the Huskies can't take a moment off to bask in the glow. They'll head up the road a bit to Pasadena City College tomorrow to take on the #22-ranked Lancers in another big SCC matchup. Click here for full team schedule.
