Water polo in upset loss to Southwestern

SAN DIEGO, CA — The water polo team closed San Diego Mesa Tournament play with a 8-4 upset loss to Southwestern College on Saturday Oct. 3. ELAC defeated Southwestern 7-6 on Sept. 12.

Freshman Alejandra Mendoza (South Gate HS) scored three goals, the same amount she scored in the first meeting between the schools. She leads the Huskies in scoring this season tied with sophomore Brandy Macias (Bell Gardens), each with 13 goals.

Sophomore Yvonne Young (Mark Keppel) had four steals against Southwestern. She leads the Huskies with 48 total steals to date.

Freshman Krystal Ramirez (Montebello) had 12 saves for the Huskies. ELAC dropped to 2-13 overall while Southwestern (1-10) won its first game of the season.

The Huskies lost to host Miramar (3-7), 11-3, also on Saturday. Macias knocked in two goals with Young scoring the other. Young’s quick play helped her to four steals.

ELAC lost to Ventura College (9-6) 13-1 and Palomar College (10-7) 19-5 in the tournament on Friday, Oct. 2.

In the first meeting with Ventura, Mendoza scored twice so the Cougars were all over Mendoza in her three goal attempts. Macias, however, scored the lone Husky goal.

The Huskies responded on defense against Ventura with 12 steals. Young had five, freshman Reanna Calvaruzo (Whittier) had three and freshman Julia Soto (Garfield) had three steals.

Against Palomar, who went 4-0 in the round-robin tournament, ELAC didn’t have too many answers on defense except for Young’s and Macias’ five and three steals, respectively.

Both Huskies’ scored ELAC’s goals, Macias with three and Mendoza with two. Ramirez had 12 saves against Palomar.

ELAC continues South Coast Conference play on Wednesday, Oct. 7 at Pasadena City College at 3 p.m. The teams are tied for fifth place in the SCC.
