Strong Performances at LOTP Tourney Nets Huskies 2nd Place

East Los Angeles College women's wrestling hosted their second annual Leader of the Pack Tournament today, welcoming teams from up and down the state to Monterey Park.

Currently ranked #3 in the state, the Huskies needed a strong showing to not just maintain their ranking but their momentum as the State Championships are only two weeks away. Thankfully, they were to accomplish just that: on the strength of four first-place and two second-place finishes, ELAC finished second overall in today's tourney with 171.0 points (#1 state-ranked Cerritos College was first overall with 190.5 points).

"It was a really good day, we had good matches," said head coach Angel Solis.

At one point late in the tournament, ELAC trailed Cerritos by only single digits in the overall team score. Coach Solis knows he just needs just a bit more to catch the top-ranked and defending state champion Falcons.

"A couple of more pins in the early rounds," explained Solis. "A couple more people in the finals."

Some Huskies' highlights amongst today's action:

  • Sophomore Isabella Calle, ranked #1 in the state for the 220lb weight class, earned first-place today albeit due to an injury stoppage in the finals.
  • Freshman Ariana Valdivia, ranked #1 in for 136lbs, netted first by winning four matches in a crowded field of wrestlers. Valdivia defeated Katrina Estrada of Fresno City by Decision, 6-1, in the final round.
  • Freshman Mia Ramirez earned tops in the 116lb bracket by getting the Decision, 6-3, over Satira Sohal of Cerritos in the first-place match.
  • Sophomore Delilah Felix-Lopez, ranked #1 for 123lbs, battled it out with #2 state-ranked Jade Morales of Santa Ana in an anticipated and hard-fought first place matchup. Felix-Lopez finished as the runner-up as Morales got the edge (Dec 6-3) this time.
