Update and Quick Preview Ahead of State Championships

by Chris Nunez

As East LA College women's wrestling gets set to head north to Sacramento tomorrow for the State Championships, we take a moment to review some final rankings before this weekend's action.

With the Huskies' strong performance at the Leader of the Pack Tournament (LOTP) two weeks ago, the team moved up one spot from March's rankings to take the #2 in state rankings, moving past the Mt. SAC Mounties. The defending State Champion Cerritos College Falcons is still in the top spot.

Huksies' Weight Class State Rankings:

FIVE QUESTIONS GOING INTO STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS:

  • Can East LA keep the hot streak going from their tournament two weeks ago and make a few improvements?

They'll need Ramirez and Calle (last year's state champ at 220lb) to hold onto their top spots while a few others join them. Case in point: Felix-Lopez was bumped down via a loss to Santa Ana's Jade Morales at LOTP... can she get revenge on Morales and repeat as state champ at 123lbs?

  • Can ELAC boast more than two weight class champions?

See above for Felix-Lopez, but perhaps some of her aforementioned teammates can also shoot for gold in their weight classes.

  • Can those wrestlers who lose in championship come back in the consolation bracket and place?

The top spot in the consolation bracket is third place. But any ELAC non weight-class winner who can place in the top-10 will help the Huskies in the overall team score.

  • Can the Pack improve on last year's third-place finish?

The Huskies will at least need to hold off Mt. SAC, last year's State runner-up. Then they'll need to find a way to close the gap with the defending champs in Cerritos, which leads to...

  • Can ELAC defeat powerhouses Mt SAC and Cerritos?

At the LOTP, head coach Angel Solis laid out the path to stave off the Mounties and catch the Falcons. "A couple of more pins in the early rounds," explained Solis. "A couple more people in the finals."
